Farming has been the main industry in Glenshesk for hundreds if not thousands of years, since man first arrived in Ireland. In the past, like much of Ireland this Glen would have been heavily wooded, and although the introduction of farming and subsequent clearing of space for growing of crops and for feeding livestock has changed the landscape, this Glen surprising still has several ancients forests, including what is thought to be one of the oldest oak forest’s in Ireland, Breen.

This section is not meant to give a detailed history of farming in Ireland, but rather a snapshot of farming in recent times and as it is today in Glenshesk.
